Jobi McAnuff praises West Brom defender Conor Townsend

West Brom defender Conor Townsend has been named as one of the best players in his position in the Championship by pundit Jobi McAnuff.

The 28-year-old has featured 21 times so far this season in the Championship as a left-back and left-wing-back, and has been one of the stand-out players in Valerien Ismael’s side since he took over.

Townsend was named in the starting lineup for his 22nd appearance for the game against Barnsley on Friday night, where pundit McAnuff was full of praise for him.

Speaking live on Sky Sports Main Event, McAnuff insisted that Townsend was “massive” for their style of play and was one of the best in the division in his position.

“He’s been massive,” he said. “Every time we watch a West Brom game he’s a player that really stands out.

“He gives them fantastic width on that left-hand side, great delivery into the box, energy, everything that we associate with an Ismael team. I think he really fits the mould in that position. In terms of consistency, he’s had a really, really good season.

“In his position in the league, he’s one of the better players certainly.”

Consistency is key

As has been said before, consistency is one of the biggest factors of success in the Championship and Townsend embodies that in his performances.

He may not be the shiniest toy in the box or the biggest name, but he offers 100 percent commitment to every performance and is as reliable as they come.

With great delivery from the wing this season, his two assists seem low and are just another reason why a certified goalscorer in the side would take them up a level when they have this type of service to feed off.

Consistent and reliable, Townsend is exactly what Valerien Ismael wants from his squad of players and it’s why he is a regular starter whenever he is fit and available on the left hand side of the defence.
