Connor Townsend hopeful for West Brom’s promotion hopes

West Brom defender Conor Townsend is still convinced they have what it takes to get promoted after Friday night’s goalless draw with Barnsley.

The Baggies are unbeaten in five in the Sky Bet Championship but have only accumulated nine points in that time with three disappointing draws.

Townsend believes they need to take advantage of their upcoming fixtures to close the gap at the top of the table.

Speaking to the official club website after the 0-0 draw at Oakwell, Townsend remained upbeat about promotion.

“We’re halfway through the season and still in a good position. We aren’t where we want to be, but that has to be the target for us going forward now.

“We know what we have to work on collectively and individually, but we’re still well in with a shout to achieve what we want this season.

“Two, three or even six points doesn’t mean much at this stage in this league when the games come at you thick and fast.

“It’s all about being in and around it come March time when the run-in really starts. There’s a lot of games between now and then, so we can really set ourselves up well for that.”

Positives?

West Brom are looking to secure automatic promotion back into the premier league after they were relegated at the end of last season.

Valerian Ismael’s team will look to extend their unbeaten but must start to win games if they want to keep up with front runners Fulham and Bournemouth.

The Baggies travel to Derby and host Preston and Cardiff in their next three games and must take advantage according to 28-year-old Townsend.

It is important that they pick up some wins before they have a break from Championship football as they face Premier League Brighton in the FA Cup third round.

That is the kind of opposition they would like to be facing week in week out as they fight for their second promotion in three years.
