View: Sam Johnstone very unlikely to stay at West Brom after latest update

It seems as though West Brom may be about to lose one of their best players in January as Sam Johnstone nears an exit from the club.

Recent reports from TEAMtalk suggest that the England goalkeeper is a target for four different Premier League clubs, including Tottenham, Newcastle and West Ham.

With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, it seems as though the best ending for this scenario is for an exit in January.

The 28-year-old has found himself as the best goalkeeper in the Championship this season, with the best record of stoppers to have played five or more games.

He has kept his place in the England squad despite playing in the second tier, which shows the opportunity to feature regularly in Gareth Southgate’s plans is very much possible.

But for West Brom, they know they’re weaker without him. If they sell their ‘brilliant‘ ‘keeper in January, a new goalkeeper needs to be brought in to replace him with David Button, not of the required level for a long run in the side.

That just adds more pressure to the team, who already know they need a striker who can put the ball in the net at the other end of the pitch to really stand a chance of success in the second half of the season.

Johnstone would likely start at Newcastle, while West Ham would have him competing with Lukasz Fabianski who is now 36 and Alphonse Areola who is on loan from Paris Saint-Germain.

Tottenham on the other hand would be strange, with Hugo Lloris the current captain and considered one of the best in the world in his position. But his contract is also set to expire at the end of the season and his future is in the air, so there is potential for Johnstone to become the number one.

It wouldn’t be ideal but if the Baggies can get some cash for their top man rather than losing him for free and then use that to strengthen the squad and earn promotion, then it seems like a win-win situation.

In other West Brom news, Sky Sports pundit believes West Brom have big advantage in promotion race.
