Pat Frost wants West Brom senior players rested in FA Cup game v Brighton

Pat Frost has urged West Brom to play the under-23s in January’s FA Cup clash against Brighton so as to get some of their senior players back in action.

The Baggies lost 1-0 to Derby County at Pride Park on Monday (27 December), with Karlan Grant and Alex Mowatt missing the game after returning positive lateral flows.

Covid-19 and injuries have denied Valerien Ismael the chance to have a full squad available of recent, and the former Baggies kitman is hoping the club request for a postponement of their January 2 clash with Cardiff City so as to have enough recovery days for their unavailable stars.

Frost said on his personal Twitter account while reacting to yesterday’s defeat: “Absolutely not good enough, we need to hang on in there.

“Hopefully, the New Year’s game gets kyboshed.

“Play the kids in the Cup game and that gives us two weeks to get three or four in….and boy, do we need them.”

Good idea

The Cardiff game is in doubt from the look of things, and West Brom would benefit a lot from its postponement.

However, having been dumped out of the League Cup, Ismael could be keen on having a go at the FA Cup.

A win against Brighton cannot be ruled out if he fields his strongest XI, but the Frenchman will have to decide whether he is willing to risk his players’ fitness for the game or rest them for the Queens Park Rangers’ league clash in the middle of January.

At the moment, Albion do not have enough depth in their squad to challenge across two competitions, and playing the kids against Brighton will not be a bad idea.

That did not particularly go well against Arsenal in August, though, with the Gunners running riot in a 6-0 demolition during the second round.

West Brom have struggled in recent games as a result of the positive tests in their squad, and that could jeopardise their promotion chances.

Ismael needs them back as soon as possible, and the decisions made in the next 18 days or thereabouts could be crucial to their campaign.

In other West Brom news, the Baggies have tabled a new contract offer to centre forward.
