QPR boss Warburton admits Dieng absence 'will hurt' ahead of West Brom clash
QPR manager Mark Warburton has said the absence of goalkeeper Seny Dieng will cause a selection issue ahead of the club’s game against West Brom this month.
Dieng will be out of contention for Warburton’s side for West Brom’s visit to the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium later this month.
His involvement in Nigeria’s African Cup of Nations squad means West Brom are handed an advantage as Warburton takes on a crucial selection dilemma.
The match will be West Brom’s second league game of 2022 following their tie against Cardiff on Sunday 2 January.
Warburton, quoted on West London Sport, admitted his frustration by saying: “I say to Seny all the time: ‘Go and show you are the best in the division’.
“He has got presence, desire, he trains so hard. It will be a loss. Simple as that.
“No disrespect to Jordan or any of the guys behind him, when you lose a keeper of that quality it will hurt.
“But this is where your squads have to dig deep, show desire and character.
“It’s going to be a tough challenge but all teams are facing it.”
Gain for Baggies
West Brom boss Valérien Ismaël will be keen to take advantage of Dieng’s absence in this game.
QPR are breathing down the Baggies’ necks. They sit in seventh just three points behind West Brom at the time of writing so this game will certainly be crucial as both clubs battle to claim a play-off spot in the second half of the campaign.
Along with Yoann Barbet and Rob Dickie, Dieng has played every minute of every match for Warburton’s side this season. Therefore, the loss is certainly a hammer blow for QPR who are left with Jordan Archer and Joe Walsh as goalkeeper options for the match.
West Brom face their own selection issue with Semi Ajayi replacing Rangers defender Leon Balogun in Nigeria’s squad earlier this week. However, Ismaël has a wide range of centre-half talent cementing themselves in starting line-ups and so the absence of Ajayi, who has dropped to the bench in recent matches, won’t be an issue.
This game could be crucial with the two teams just three points apart and the Baggies fans will be hopeful that their side can capitalise on QPR’s loss.
In other West Brom news, the manager responds to rumours surrounding a potential striker signing.
