West Brom to make loan decisions soon for January window - report

West Brom will make a decision on the loan situation with their goalkeepers ‘soon’, with Josh Griffiths possibly returning, according to The Athletic.

The Baggies goalkeeping situation is totally up in the air with their two senior goalkeepers Sam Johnstone and David Button out of contract at the end of the season.

Young goalkeeper Alex Palmer has been the number three this season, while 20-year-old Josh Griffiths has spent the campaign on loan at Lincoln.

But according to The Athletic, the club could make a decision on the two young stoppers in January in order to ensure neither of them faces a full season on the sidelines without action.

With Johnstone expected to leave at the end of his contract, Button is hopeful that his short spell in the side now with Johnstone’s suspension will be enough to convince the club to keep him on.

Palmer was expected to be the number two this season but Johnstone never left and instead he hasn’t played. The club could now recall Griffiths from his loan away in order to send Palmer out, ensuring both goalkeepers get some development time this season.

Decisions

Johnstone will leave, either this month or next, and Button is the senior ‘keeper in the squad so will get priority when it comes to the next number one.

But in Palmer and Griffiths, West Brom have two very talented young goalkeepers who could make a push themselves.

Palmer is in need of regular game time as he hits 25-years-old now, so a loan would definitely be the best solution for him but it means Griffiths would have to return to provide extra cover for the first-team.

Long-term, both players getting six months of development is better than one getting none and it would also allow the club to take a closer look at Griffiths in a first-team environment.

A decision needs to be made soon though and the Athletic expect it too. Ultimately, this is a long-term decision for the club rather than anything really to do with this season but it’s just as important nonetheless.
