West Brom academy star Lino Sousa moves to Arsenal
The highly-rated West Brom youngster Lino Sousa has become Mikel Arteta’s first January signing by moving to Arsenal, reports Football London.
The versatile left-back has reportedly been earmarked as a “potential star of the future” in North London.
The academy product had been playing up two age groups for the under-18s in the Midlands, and had started a Premier League 2 match.
It will no doubt come as frustrating news to West Brom fans that yet another young prospect has joined the long line of players developed by the Baggies who then saw better opportunities elsewhere.
Of particular frustration is the number of such players who have moved to local rivals Aston Villa in recent years, so perhaps losing Sousa to the capital will be a small mercy this time.
Tim Iroegbunam, Fin Thorndike and Finn Azaz all moved across the West-Midlands Derby divide before the current season, and Louie Barry has ended up in the same place after spending a year at Barcelona’s La Masia.
In addition, Morgan Rogers moved to Manchester City in the same year as Barry left, and Kiano Dyer went to Chelsea last summer.
It is a painful trend for Baggies fans to have to witness so much talent leave the club before they have even had a real chance to see it.
It is even more of a disappointment when talented youngsters end up lost in the churn of the biggest clubs and ultimately do not fulfill their potential, as has been the case with the likes of Izzy Brown and Jerome Sinclair.
In other West Brom news, manager Valerien Ismael provides a transfer update on this first-team star.
