Tony Mowbray number one choice at West Brom to replace Valerien Ismael

EuroSport journalist Dean Jones claims Tony Mowbray is at the top of the West Brom wishlist for new managers if Valerien Ismael is sacked.

Albion lost 2-0 away at Millwall in a gutless performance on Saturday, sparking angry scenes among the travelling supporters as calls for Ismael to be axed grew louder.

It remains to be seen whether Ismael will be sacked in the wake of that defeat in London but Jones reports that the Baggies are drawing up a list of potential replacements and Blackburn boss Mowbray, who quit The Hawthorns in 2009 for Celtic, is their first choice.

“My verdict on this is that the club are now seeking alternatives and are looking into options of who they could get right now,” Jones told GiveMeSport.

“Tony Mowbray, I know, would be their top choice. He’s somebody that they definitely have at the top of the list if they could have anyone.”

No chance

There’s absolutely no way that Blackburn would allow West Brom to enter talks to hire Mowbray when they are in such a strong position in the promotion race.

Blackburn are second in the Championship standings, one point clear of third-placed Bournemouth albeit having played one game more.

Mowbray’s been at Ewood Park for five years and has slowly built up a very strong squad of players that, as Albion fans will know all too well, plays good football and scores plenty of goals.

Mowbray did a brilliant job in his spell with the Baggies between 2006 and 2009.

He took us to the Championship play-off final in his first season and was unfortunate to oversee a defeat to Derby at Wembley.

One year later, his thrilling, attacking side won the Championship title and reached the FA Cup semi-finals. Yet again, the Baggies were the better team at Wembley and lost to eventual winners Portsmouth in controversial circumstances.

We were relegated and finished bottom of the Championship with Mowbray at the helm but we all knew we’d bounce right back and there were only very quiet calls for him to go.

However, he left for Celtic, which left a bit of a sour taste in the mouth of some fans.

Despite this, we’d take him back in a heartbeat.

But there’s just absolutely no way that it will happen. Blackburn won’t let it.

In other West Brom news, this goalkeeper is on the verge of leaving The Hawthorns on loan to replace a club’s record signing.
