Adrian Goldberg regrets Steve Bruce comments after West Brom appoint new manager

Adrian Goldberg says he feels “a bit mean” for what he said about Steve Bruce on the Liquidator podcast after Bruce was announced as the new West Brom boss.

The 61-year-old manager was appointed at the Hawthorns on an 18-month contract on Wednesday (February 3) following the sacking of Valerien Ismael the previous day.

Speaking on a LiquidatorLive Twitter space on Thursday night after the news came out about the new Baggies man, host Goldberg said: “I feel a bit mean for my comments on the podcast saying it was as welcome as a cold cup of sick because I really didn’t think at that point when I first mentioned it, that Steve Bruce really would get the job.

“And Chris Lepkowski pointed out that he is a decent guy and I really do believe he’s a decent guy”.

Make or break

Goldberg clearly has nothing against the manager personally, and his point of view is probably similar to a lot of those around the club, as Bruce is not the most exciting name in world football.

But in the Championship he gets results, so he has a chance to endear himself to fans if he can add a fifth promotion to the Premier League to his record.

It might be a challenge to win over the Baggies faithful, considering his history at Aston Villa and Birmingham City, but if any manager knows how to cope with that sort of dynamic it is the former Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday boss.

Most, although not all, new managerial appointments that follow the end of a particularly unpopular reign, which Ismael’s had become, give the fans the chance to reset and start to get their expectations up again.

If the results don’t follow though, and if the style of football is no better, then it could become an issue again, and the new man is probably on a fairly short leash.

In other West Brom news, Steve Madeley made an “interesting” observation about the announcement of the new boss’ arrival.
