Connor Townsend believes West Brom were ‘better team’ v Sheffield Utd

Connor Townsend has admitted that he thinks West Brom were the better team before Jake Livermore’s sending off last night (February 9).

The Baggies suffered a 2-0 defeat at Bramall Lane in Steve Bruce’s first game in charge.

Townsend questioned refereeing in the Championship with Albion playing most of the game with ten men.

“It’s disappointing to have lost the game. I thought we started really well.” Townsend told West Brom.

“We were the better team up until the red card in my opinion. It’s obviously changed the game.

“We’re disappointed with it. In my opinion, I don’t think there’s much difference between Jake’s tackle and the tackle that went in on Grady earlier on.

“There wasn’t even a foul given for that and it seems like nothing is going our way at the moment. I don’t think we’ve had a major decision go our way for a long time.”

Game killing decision

Bruce has been given an almost impossible task in getting promoted with this group of players.

West Brom

There were certainly some positives to take from the early stages of last night’s game, but it is very clear there is a lot of work to be done, as expected.

It was stupid and reckless from Livermore who simply should do better. You could argue the Blades could have been down to ten men themselves but that is typical of the Baggies luck this season – we can’t afford to give them anything, the opposition or referees.

It wasn’t exactly the fairy-tale that the former Newcastle manager would have wanted but he won’t be phased by the result one bit.

Bruce seemingly enjoys having his back up against a wall having spent most of his managerial career in a similar position.

There are still a lot of games to go and a lot of time for the new boss to turn things around. All the Baggies fans can do now is hope for the best and get behind the team.
