‘Have to…’ – Kevin Phillips says West Brom must make playoffs this season

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips says West Brom ‘have to get into the playoffs’ this season and says Steve Bruce hasn’t had an ideal start to life at the club.

Bruce started his Baggies tenure with a 2-0 defeat to former club Sheffield United last week, as he saw them drop into ninth place in the table.

Despite that start though, former West Brom striker Phillips believes that the club ‘have to get into the playoffs’ this season and should turn all their attention towards that because they can forget about the top two.

West Brom

“It’s not an ideal start for him,” he told West Brom News exclusively.

“I think there was a little bit, I wouldn’t say unrest among the supporters but I would say a little bit of surprise.

“So I think it isn’t the ideal start for his career at West Brom but you’re right. For me, they have to get into the playoffs. The top two you can pretty much forget about with Bournemouth and Fulham the way they’re looking.

“So I would say forget about that and concentrate on just getting into the playoffs and then getting ready for those to be honest.”

A win for West Brom against Blackburn on Monday will see them close the gap on the top six to just one point with 13 games remaining of the regular season.

They still have Middlesbrough, Fulham, Bournemouth, Huddersfield and rivals Birmingham between now and the end of the season too.
