West Brom complete signing of defender Nguepissi after Birmingham City exit
West Brom have agreed terms to sign young defender Cianole Nguepissi after he left Birmingham City.
In an official announcement on Thursday [17 February], it has been confirmed that the 18-year-old has signed a professional deal that runs until the end of next season plus has an option to be extended by a further 12 months.
Nguepissi has been on trial at the Albion, playing for the Under-23s against Southampton, Aston Villa and his now-former club Birmingham.
Welcome to the Albion, Cianole.
It remains to be seen how Nguepissi gets on at The Hawthorns but it’s good that the club got to have a good look at him before offering a contract.
Earlier this season, he was playing for Birmingham’s Under-18s and Under-23s side, featuring in their Premier League 2 defeat to Norwich in October when he came on as a substitute.
Nguepissi can play as a centre-back and a defensive midfielder, meaning he’s comfortable at carrying the ball out from the defence.
Writing on the Birmingham Mail website on 24 January, journalist Joseph Chapman hailed Nguepissi’s ability with the ball at his feet and spoke about how the youngster was impressing the Black Country club’s staff while he was on trial.
He also raved about the youngster’s “excellent” performance in the Under-23s’ clash against Birmingham.
We won’t get our hopes up yet because he’s still a young lad with a lot to prove.
However, it’s good to see the club making additions at youth level because it shows there’s still some recruitment going on behind-the-scenes with the future in mind.
In other West Brom news, Albion and Wolves are in pursuit of signing this goalscoring midfielder.
