Steve Bruce gives brutal assessment of West Brom players

Steve Bruce has slammed his West Brom players following their defeat to Swansea city last night (February 28).

The Baggies fell to a 2-0 loss at the Hawthorns which leaves them 13th in the Championship, eight points away from the playoff places.

Bruce was brutal in assessing his “nervous and anxious” players but put the onus heavily on himself to fix the issue.

He told West Brom: “I understand we’re in a difficult place and we’re in a bad run, but from the first five minutes of the game the decisions we made and the balls we were playing were a big problem for us.

“It was a difficult evening.”

The 61-year-old added “It’s alright saying we’ve got a really good squad of players on paper. We’re not seeing enough of that on the pitch.

“I’m disappointed not just with the manner in which we conceded goals, but it all started in the second minute when the first corner we had was played in too low.

“There were too many players nervous and anxious. There wasn’t enough confidence. It’s up to me to try and breathe confidence into them.”

Too far gone

It looks as if promotion or even playoffs for that matter will have to be put on hold until next season.

It is a very difficult one to understand because Albion are getting some chances and the game could have been flipped on its head if Callum Robinson had buried those two chances rather than hitting the post but he never did.

It stems back to what the boss said in terms of the players confidence, it is non-existent and has been for a long, long time now.

The team were massively struggling under Valerien Ismael and whilst things have improved slightly under Bruce, it still is nowhere near good enough.

The former Newcastle manager will have the chance to redeem himself with this future looking over unless there is a major change in form.

He has the last 12 months on his contract to bring in some players, get a good pre-season under his belt with the team and give promotion to the Premier League another good crack before his contract is up.
