‘You’re not fit to wear the shirt’ – West Brom fans sing against their own team in defeat v Swansea
West Brom fans turned on their own club during the 2-0 defeat to Swansea on Monday night, with chants against their players from the stands.
The Baggies made it six defeats in seven games and won win in 13 with the result, slipping down to 13th in the Championship table to all but end their playoff hopes.
But the result against the Swans on Monday seemed to be the last straw for fans at The Hawthorns, with The Athletic’s Steve Madeley reporting that fans were singing ‘you’re not fit to wear the shirt’ towards the end of the game.
As Cyrus Christie doubled the lead late on to seal the result with a shot that Sam Johnstone should arguably have done better with, the fans turned sour.
In a stadium that was only half full to begin with, the atmosphere turned toxic and fans also booed the players after the final whistle when they went to applaud them.
Shocking
West Brom fans couldn’t have imagined even in their worst nightmares that the season would have unravelled in this fashion earlier this year.
But the club have scored just 11 goals since October 30th and even despite bringing in Steve Bruce to replace Valerien Ismael last month, nothing has changed.

He has failed to get any sort of reaction out of the team since his arrival and results have arguably got worse, with four defeats and a goalless draw in his five games so far.
There is certainly a case to make that the board have got it wrong by bringing him in as the replacement, and fans have made it clear that they’ve had enough of the below par performances.
The players need to improve hugely, the board need to find the correct alternative if Bruce isn’t it before the season ends and they all need to get the fans back on side.
