Alex Palmer leaves West Brom on emergency loan, should debut today

West Brom goalkeeper Alex Palmer has joined Luton Town on an emergency loan deal and could make his debut today in the Championship, the Hatters have confirmed.

The 25-year-old stopper featured for the Baggies in the Carabao Cup against Arsenal earlier this season but was largely considered as third-choice behind Sam Johnstone and David Button.

After an injury to Jed Steer in the FA Cup against Chelsea, Luton were given permission by the EFL to make an emergency loan signing and Palmer was the man they picked out.

Palmer was linked with a loan move to Luton in the January transfer window, but a deal didn’t materialise in the end and he stayed at The Hawthorns.

He is expected now to make his Luton debut in the Championship fixture against Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.

Nice to help

Palmer realistically isn’t going to get a look in at West Brom between now and the end of the season, if at all, so it’s nice of the club to lend a helping hand.

Ultimately, it helps them get a player some regular football in the meantime too so it’s no skin off their nose to let him leave when it doesn’t affect their own first-team squad too much.

There is no confirmation on how long the loan agreement lasts, but Steve Bruce has Johnstone and Button battling for the number one shirt and even then there is a clear victor in who holds that position.

West Brom need points to save their own season, as their promotion hopes have all but been flushed down the toilet following a run of just one win in 13 games.

They take on Hull this afternoon in the MKM Stadium, looking to earn the new manager his first win since taking over in early February.
