Jake Livermore ‘should remain captain’ at West Brom – Joseph Masi

West Brom finally got back to winning ways on Saturday and one of the keys to their victory was the return from suspension of club captain Jake Livermore.

The 32-year-old partnered Albion academy graduate Taylor Gardner-Hickman is Steve Bruce’s midfield and looked back to his dominant best that previously earned him an England callup.

Karlan Grant grabbed the headlines by scoring both goals in the Baggies’ 2-0 win at Hull City but the skipper seamlessly slotted back into the swing of things.

Express and Star journalist Joseph Masi backed the 32-year-old on the Baggies Broadcast podcast to keep hold of the armband despite some fans wanting a different leader in the dressing room.

“Everyone who listens to this podcast will know I’m a Jake Livermore fan. I think he is a top, top, top bloke,” he said.

“His disciplinary record makes this very hard to say, but for me, without a shadow of a doubt, he should be captain, he should remain captain.”

First choice

When he is on form, Livermore is probably the first name on the teamsheet at The Hawthorns, not just of the midfielders.

His leadership qualities have actually been highlighted even more during his time out suspended as the Baggies struggled big time to find a result.

Not only that, he then returned to the side with great effect at the MKM Stadium in Hull and led the confidence-ridden Albion squad to their first win under Bruce’s management.

It takes a special kind of individual to come back better than ever after a setback like the red card he received against Sheffield United and Livermore is exactly that.

Masi is right to suggest Livermore keeps the armband with no real options elsewhere to take up the responsibility.

His link play with Gardner-Hickman was a mere cherry on the cake that is his return to action that might just spur Albion on towards a potential playoff push.
