Ron Gourlay reveals summer transfer window plans at West Brom

West Brom chief executive Ron Gourlay says the club are already making plans for the summer transfer window, admitting they need to invest in the scouting department.

The Baggies look set for an extended stay in the Championship following their poor form this season, as they currently sit in 13th place in the table six points adrift from the playoff places.

But after minimal investment over the last two transfer windows Gourlay has revealed, as quoted by Birmingham Mail, that plans are in place to widen the scouting network for more international reach as they look to boost recruitment.

“We certainly need to strengthen the scouting network, there’s no doubt about it,” Gourlay said. “We’ve already discussed that with Ian and we are already looking at the whole structure now, more international reach.

“We’ve been home based if I’m honest, so we’re looking at that and trying to address that very quickly. Scouting is an area now where we need to invest in, and strengthen the recruitment process.”

About time

The club has had great success in the past from cheap options in European markets in the past and it’s encouraging that they’re looking to do that again.

All of Graham Dorrans, Jonas Olsson, Youssouf Mulumbu, Peter Odemwingie and Claudio Yacob arrived from Europe for fees of less than £2m and were solid in the Premier League.

Once Tony Pulis came into the club he opted to go with homegrown talent with experience and since then they’ve struggled to get back to their old ways.

But with the realisation that they could spend another season in the second tier, they’ve now made a decision to revert to what brought them success previously while still looking to save money.

Something needs to change if the club are to get back where they want to be, so it’s great to hear that there are plans in place for them to do that.
