Ron Gourlay slams West Brom players, vows to restore fans pride

Ron Gourlay has slammed the West Brom players for the recent decline of the Baggies, claiming the club has been in a “comfort zone” for too long.

Albion fans are said to be embarrassed with the current state of their club as they sit 13th in the Championship in what should have been a promotion push under new manager Steve Bruce.

The new chief executive swore to make the changes to make them proud of their club once again.

West Brom

“This was coming,” he told Express & Star when quizzed on the Baggies decline.

“This club has been in a comfort zone for too long and we have to shake things up to push it forward. We started the season very well.

“But when things started to slip we didn’t have the mental strength, enough leaders on the field, enough winners on the field, to get us out of that period.

“Hopefully now the changes that we are trying to make – we can push the club forward and put a bit of pride into the fanbase and take away the embarrassment they are feeling at the moment.

“That is what I am hearing, the fans are embarrassed, and I will always listen to the fans and hear what the issues are in their eyes.”

Must change

The criticism of the players is somewhat justified but also very unfair.

It is almost impossible to play well and get the results Albion need with the state the club finds itself in, which stems for them very top.

West Brom

There hasn’t been a clear direction that West Brom are moving in for some time which has left the on-field action to suffer.

The Baggies have been through so many managers in recent years, all with a different style of football and needing completely different types of players in order to achieve that.

The club did try to carve out a long-term plan with the appointment of Valerien Ismael, but everyone knows how that ended.

The players should take some responsibility for the results of the team with their performances being not good enough for a long time but they essentially have one hand tied behind their back as does Bruce.

Thank god Gourlay is now at the club and hopefully, the chief can help resolve these issues.
