Don Goodman wowed by ‘brilliant’ Alex Mowatt in 1st half of West Brom v Hudds

Alex Mowatt earned another start under Steve Bruce at West Brom and he was quick to stamp his mark on the first half against Huddersfield.

The 27-year-old very nearly opened the scoring with just three minutes on the clock when a long throw-in was cleared into his path on the edge of the area.

His eyes lit up and he unleashed a vicious left-footed volley towards goal that the Terriers’ goalkeeper had to parry out for a corner.

Sky Sports co-commentator Don Goodman was amazed at the control and power Mowatt was able to get on the shot but knows that he has it in his locker.

“What a strike from Alex Mowatt with that wand of a left foot, he can do this all day. Absolutely brilliant strike,” Goodman said.

Mowatt arrived at The Hawthorns last summer with a reputation for scoring incredible long-range goals that make for fantastic YouTube highlights.

But since he pulled on the blue and white of the Albion, he has very rarely let fly from distance and the Baggies could easily be missing out two or three goals per season as a result.

What Bruce really needs to do is allow Mowatt the freedom to shoot from wherever he likes because he is more likely than any to find that one gem of a strike that flies into the top corner.

Adam Reach is another Albion player with a track record of holding his own goal of the season competition but he too is yet to be allowed the license to strike from range.

Admittedly, the majority will either be saved or fly into the stands but as West Brom know far too well if you don’t shoot, you don’t score.

In other West Brom news, there is uncertainty over the short-term future of this Baggies shot-stopper as his loan club awaits an injury update.
