Matt Clarke shares ‘home truths’ told at West Brom

Matt Clarke has revealed that some “home truths” have been expressed in the West Brom dressing room amid terrible form.

Despite Steve Bruce mounting a last-gasp promotion push, the Baggies’ below-par form this season has left them with a lot to do as they sit seven points off the pace in 12th in the Championship.

The Albion defender claimed the “experienced” players amongst the squad can deal with the pressures that their form brings.

Clarke said told Express & Star: “We’ve needed some harsh words from the gaffer at times and among ourselves.

“There’s been a few home truths told because that’s where we’re at.

“There’s enough of us here who are experienced enough to know it can’t always be happy, jolly, fun sessions. You have to do the nasty bits and we’ve been through those sessions now.”

Too little, too late

These players certainly need some home truths telling. If they want it done properly, they should spend some time with the fans and hear their thoughts on how bad this season has been because it has been awful.

It would be easy to say this squad is a mess because it is but there are enough capable players in it for the performances to be as bad as they have been for the most part this season.

Valerien Ismael’s departure from the Hawthorns looked to be a turning point in the season for the Baggies but the club left it far too late to sack the reportedly soon to be Besiktas manager.

It took Bruce a little longer to transform the team with his recent results proving he has the skills required but the players simply didn’t do enough – leaving it far too long to snap out of the hangover left by Ismael.

There is still a small glimmer of hope but Bruce will undoubtedly be laying into this squad in preparation for a hugely important next season.
