West Brom counter-attack problems must be rectified as soon as possible

A lack of goals has been the running theme tune to the season West Brom have had in 2021/22 and it has really held them back from a playoff push.

The Baggies are eight points adrift of a place in the top six with just seven games left to play which leaves their hopes of achieving such a finish as a long shot at best.

Goalscoring may have been the biggest issue but Albion have still found the net more than enough times to win more games than they have.

There is one area of their game however that has proved to be shockingly bad this season and Steve Bruce has to be paying attention to this kind of thing if he wants West Brom to be successful this season.

According to WhoScored.com, the Baggies have not scored a single goal on the counter-attack all season in the Championship.

Not one. It is scarcely believable that Albion haven’t broken quickly to turn defence into attack in a split second for an entire season of league football and it really brings into question what the management have been doing on the training pitch.

Admittedly, a lot of the season was managed by Valerien Ismael who prided his tactics on controlling the ball which didn’t lend itself to counter-attacking football.

But Bruce is a more traditional manager and being able to attack with pace is something that was a staple of the teams he played in during his career.

It’s no wonder we’ve struggled to score all season because we don’t take advantage of a stretched defence like every other side in the league is capable of doing and it’s really dented our chances.

In other West Brom news, The Athletic believe this Baggies defender could be surplus to requirements soon.
