West Brom need Romaine Sawyers to add goals to midfield

West Brom might have found some better form in the past month but they are still not at the level anybody expects of them in the Championship.

Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Birmingham City brought everyone back down to earth after four unbeaten prior to the derby loss and Steve Bruce will need to get back to the drawing board to find the solution to his problems.

One well-talked about issue for the Baggies has been a severe lack of goals under both Bruce and Ismael and it is mainly due to an over-reliance on the strikers to finish every chance they get.

What hasn’t been mentioned all that much is the lack of goals coming from the midfield though with none of the Albion engine room being able to chip in sufficiently to the goals tally.

There is, however, a player on West Brom’s books that could solve those issues next season but he is currently plying his trade at another second division club.

Saint Kitts and Nevis star Romaine Sawyers is starting to cement himself in Stoke City’s team and he bagged himself a goal in the Potters’ 2-1 defeat away at relegation strugglers Reading last night.

He may have struggled in the Premier League last season but in the Championship, there are few players who can win a game by themselves in the same way he can.

With Jake Livermore providing his cover and Taylor Gardner-Hickman buzzing around him, Sawyers could become the glue to the entire West Brom team next season and if he reaches his best, he could be a player of the year contender.

We have to look past his difficult season in the top flight and focus on his match-winning ability one step below.
