Ally Robertson raves about West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone

Ally Robertson is disappointed that West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone will leave the club at the end of the season.

The Baggies legend has hailed Johnstone as a “fantastic” player, and adds that the club should have tied him on a new deal a long time ago.

“We all know Sam Johnstone is going to leave at the end of the season,” wrote Robertson in his column for Express and Star.

“He has been fantastic for us and I wish him all the best for the future. He will, understandably, feel he needs to be in the Premier League.

“It’s a massive disappointment he’s leaving on a free transfer – the club needed to get him tied down long ago.”

Disappointment

The 29-year-old joined the Baggies in 2018 on a permanent deal from Manchester United and he has since become a key player for the club.

The goalkeeper has won three caps for his country as well, and there is a high probability he can return to his former club.

Johnstone has made it very clear that he won’t be penning a new deal at the club, and losing him really a “massive disappointment”, especially on a free transfer.

For a player of his quality, he deserves to play in the Premier League. The Baggies took a gamble that he would change his mind if they can secure promotion this season.

However, it turned out to be a disastrous campaign for the Baggies, and there’s no way they can keep hold of Johnstone now.

A bunch of clubs in the Premier League like West Ham, Tottenham and Southampton have both been consistently linked with a move for him.

He has enjoyed a wonderful career at West Brom, but it seems the journey is coming to an end shortly.
