Steve Bruce confirms West Brom transfer for Jayson Molumby is complete

The permanent transfer of Jayson Molumby from Brighton to West Brom was “done weeks ago” according to manager Steve Bruce.

The Ireland international arrived at the Hawthorns on a season-long loan in August with a view to buy, which was to be triggered after playing a certain amount of matches.

Express and Star journalist Joseph Masi reported on Twitter last month that the midfielder had played the requisite number of games for the club and would complete a permanent move for around £900,000, which the manager has now confirmed is done.

Following the 0-0 draw with Coventry yesterday the ex-Newcastle boss said, via Birmingham Mail: “Molumby’s done. Molumby was done weeks ago. The deal was kicked in weeks ago, so he’s our player now.

“He’s a young player who’s got a lot to learn still, but he wants to win; he’s got a bit of an attitude with him, which I like, so, yeah, he’ll be here next year.”

Addition

The 22-year-old is still young, and has a lot of experience in the second-tier for someone of that age.

In theory that should give him room to improve still, while possessing a strong know-how of what it takes in the Championship.

At the same time, he has been a fairly regular performer this season, hence the permanent transfer being activated, having featured in 29 league games.

But he hasn’t exactly been on fire for a struggling team that saw one manager sacked midseason and the next preside over a wildly inconsistent side.

After the Coventry draw mathematically ended the remote hopes of making it into the playoffs, focus will now turn to the squad for next season.

Whether the best way to spend nearly a million pounds was to keep a player who hasn’t been a massive stand out on loan is debatable.

It remains to be seen whether fellow Seagulls loanee Matt Clarke follows him to the Hawthorns on a permanent basis, having appeared in even more league games at 32.
