West Brom track Northampton Town midfielder Shaun McWilliams ahead of contract expiry
West Brom are tracking Northampton Town midfielder Shaun McWilliams, whose talks on a new deal are “on ice”, The Sun reports.
The 23-year-old is currently in the League Two play-offs with the Cobblers after they missed out on automatic promotion on goals scored.
According to the report, he has “impressed” for the promotion chasers this year and could be available on a free transfer in the summer.
The Baggies will face competition for his signature however, with Championship bottom side Barnsley, and League One side Portsmouth are also keen on him.
McWilliams has been a central member of the fourth-placed finish this season, making 35 league appearances in the midfield while also filling in at right-back on occasion.
Two things are clear from the club’s recent moves as Steve Bruce looks to shake up his squad for next season – that he feels plenty needs changing, and he’s going to have to do it cheap.
After the club’s worst league finish in two decades it is probably no surprise that he wants to make a number of moves.
Fans may not feel thrilled that fourth-tier free agent signings are where the club is looking this summer, but McWilliams is highly rated enough to have competition among higher divisions, and his side have performed well in League Two this year.
Bruce has admitted previously that free agents are going to be where he expects to do most of his business, but that doesn’t have to be a bad thing.
If it forces decisions to be made more carefully it could turn out to be a benefit, with money spent over the last couple of seasons hardly bearing major fruit.
If McWilliams achieves promotion back to League One he may be motivated to continue the job at Northampton, but at 23 and with the option to step up it would seem logical that he may be looking to move on, and with the Baggies set to be the only one of the three named suitors due to be in the second-tier next year they may be the most attractive.
In other West Brom news, another current player has signed a contract extension hot on the heels of David Button.
