West Brom finished 6 places lower than squad value suggests this season
We are all very aware that West Brom did not perform to the levels we all expected of them this season but the latest stats really highlight that.
The Baggies’ squad is one of the highest valued group of players in the entire second division and the predicted league table, purely based on these stats, had Albion in a position of 3.5 [The Mirror].
So when you take into account the fact that we finished tenth, that is a whole 6.5 positions lower than we should have achieved.
When you compare that to the rest of the Championship teams, West Brom lies 20th in the table with just Barnsley, Reading, Derby County and Birmingham City below them, two of which went down.
It’s the complete opposite for Luton Town though who ended the 2021-22 campaign a huge 13.5 positions higher than their predicted finish.
It doesn’t take a genius to realise that the Hatters are doing something very right and the Baggies are doing anything but right now and it needs to change.
The Albion board members need to get together and discuss whether Steve Bruce is really the man to lead the football club back to the Premier League and then keep them there for a significant number of years.
They all believed that Valerien Ismael was that man last summer and we all know how that panned out in the end so how confident can we be in them if they say that Bruce is the guy?
A big overhaul is surely on its way this summer and the squad could look completely unrecognisable come the first game of 2022-23.
But that is exactly what is required and if we still underperform relative to the value of the squad, then Bruce has to be put on the chopping block very quickly to hopefully keep our aspirations within view.
