West Brom want to sign Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow

West Brom have identified Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow as a primary target in the summer window, according to The Sun.

Steve Bruce wants to raid his old club for reinforcements as the Magpies look set to have a major squad overhaul in the summer thanks to the many billions of pounds of their new Saudi Arabian owners.

The 31-year-old goalkeeper is one of those who could be set to leave St James’ Park as Eddie Howe targets a new number one to challenge Martin Dubravka with Brighton’s Robert Sanchez high on their agenda.

Albion have already resigned David Button and Alex Palmer to new deals at The Hawthorns and 20-year-old Josh Griffiths has shown good potential while out on loan at Lincoln City this season.

But Bruce wants to add even more strength to his shot-stopping department with Darlow who has made just eight appearances this season, the majority of which came while Dubravka was injured under Bruce at the start of the campaign.

Button is alright as a stop-gap but if West Brom have any kind of ambitions of returning to the Premier League as soon as possible, he simply cannot be the club’s first choice.

It would be far more preferable if the boss tried to give his younger players a chance with both Griffiths and Palmer, 25, just as capable as the 33-year-old formerly Sanchez’s understudy at Brighton before making the move to the Midlands.

But if Bruce is insistent that he’s the best man for the job currently at The Hawthorns, then he is absolutely right to be targeting an improvement and this might be the best place to find one.

With Newcastle’s incoming overhaul, Howe needs to offload a good chunk of his squad to accommodate financial fair play rules so the likes of Darlow and other fringe players could be available for cheap.

The later into the window the Magpies go without offloading their unwanted players, the cheaper they will become but we can’t wait too long because they could soon be gone if we hold off until the last moment.
