West Brom defender Semi Ajayi signs new three-year contract extension

West Brom defender Semi Ajayi has pledged his future to the club with a three-year contract extension to keep him at The Hawthorns this summer.

Nigeria international Ajayi was set to enter the final 12 months of his contract at the end of this season, but has now agreed a new deal until 2025 as the club begin to build towards a promotion push next year.

Ajayi was initially out of favour this season under Valerien Ismael but battled back and earned his place under Steve Bruce, establishing himself as the first-choice defender at the club.

His Premier League experience and ball-playing ability has been seen as key and it seems as though Bruce has made the decision quickly to tie him down after his good form in the second half of the campaign.

Now that he is cemented for the next campaign, the club can begin looking towards who will partner him and whether that person is already at the club or needs to be brought in.

Ajayi joined the club back in 2019 from Rotherham and ever since has been a solid part of the back line.

For some reason Ismael didn’t take too well to him and isolated him from the side, but as soon as Bruce came in he was back in the side and played almost every minute available to him since then.

His leadership qualities have shone through on the pitch, while his experience helped the team in some difficult moments too.

As Bruce looks to shape his squad to his own wants and needs, it’s no surprise that the highly experienced Ajayi was one of the first players to be tied down.

The contract situations of other defenders need to be looked at now, but the question has now changed from ‘who will be the West Brom centre backs next season?’ to ‘who will partner Ajayi in defence?’ and that tells you all you need to know.
