West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone subject of Crystal Palace pursuit
Crystal Palace have earmarked West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone as a potential summer signing at Selhurst Park, according to talkSPORT.
The England international has been frozen out by Steve Bruce as he and the club have agreed for him to leave at the end of the season on a free transfer with David Button playing the final few games instead.
Unsurprisingly, plenty of Premier League sides are circling to try and sign the 29-year-old who wants to make his chances of an England call-up for the World Cup in Qatar as great as possible.
The Eagles have identified a shot-stopper as a key area to improve this summer with Vicente Guaita and Jack Butland the two to have played for Patrick Vieira’s side this season.
Both Button and fellow Baggies keeper Alex Palmer have signed new deals at The Hawthorns and look set to battle it out for the number one jersey during pre-season with 20-year-old Josh Griffiths also giving the duo a run for their money.
As good as Johnstone is, he did not win a remarkable amount of points on his own for Albion last season which is partly why we finished down in tenth rather than up near the playoffs or even promotion spots like we expected.
So considering we all sort of knew he’d leave at the end of his contract, you have to wonder why on earth we didn’t cash in on him 12 months ago and find ourselves a new number one.
It wasn’t like this revelation came as a huge shock to any of us and the likes of Palmer and Griffiths have earned the chance to pay for the Albion senior side in their careers so far.
Bruce might not even search for a new shot-stopper in the summer having secured the services of Button and Palmer for another season but those two hardly scream Premier League potential.
If the Baggies have any kind of serious ambition of promotion next season then they need to delve into the market and go big to find their new number one for the next several years.
