West Brom behind-the-scenes decisions caused Hal Robson-Kanu to leave

This time last year, West Brom released their retained list and one of the notable names on it was that of Welsh international Hal Robson-Kanu.

The 33-year-old has not found a new club since he left The Hawthorns after five years at the club and 24 goals in 154 games in the Premier League, Championship and domestic cup competitions.

The former Baggie has been speaking to the Express and Star about his exit and it wasn’t a decision that took much contemplation.

“If I was staying there had to be a long-term vision, a project,” Robson-Kanu said. “I didn’t want to be in a place where we were languishing in mid-table in the Championship.

“But some of the decisions that were being made and what was being done behind the scenes, I personally didn’t agree with so I felt it was the right time to move on.

“I made that decision quickly, a lot earlier than when it was released.

“The club put out the retained and released list but I told them a month before that I wouldn’t be staying on.

“Looking at the club now – it’s not the vision I have for the club. It should be competing as a minimum in the top two and trying to cement itself in the Premier League. Fingers crossed they can get back to a better vision and execute it.”

You have to wonder if the Welshman ever spoke to the club’s owners or board members about this and if he even bothered to confront them over changing their plans because things could have been so much different.

He shows the spirit and belief in the club that the fans do and they all want the club to bounce back to the Premier League but there doesn’t appear to be that same desire higher up the ladder.

This summer will prove to be a vital one for West Brom with Steve Bruce needing proper backing in the transfer market to build a side he feels can return to the promised land.

If we have another season like the one just past though, serious questions need to be asked of everyone at the club, from the top to the bottom, because we should be challenging for promotion to the top-flight, no doubt about it.

In other West Brom news, Bruce has family connections that can help Albion get this transfer over the line.
