Finance expert mocks West Brom as Crystal Palace published accounts

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has mocked West Brom for handing in their homework late due to being the last club to publish their 2020/21 Premier League accounts.

Crystal Palace uploaded their financial information for 2021 on 8 June, meaning Albion are the last remaining club from the 2020/21 Premier League season to do so.

West Brom shortened their accounting reference period on 31 March, allowing them extra time to publish those accounts. That move led to Maguire raising his eyebrows.

And now, the finance lecturer has taken a Coleen Rooney-esque route towards joking about West Brom’s delayed accounts.

Writing on Twitter on 8 June, Maguire said: “Crystal Palace publish 2021 accounts, which will be visible in a few days.

“This means the Price of Football latest PL club to hand in their accounting homework award for 2020/21 goes to…R̶e̶b̶e̶k̶a̶h̶ ̶V̶a̶r̶d̶y̶ West Bromwich Albion.”

Strange

We’re at a loss to explain as to why West Brom needed to change the accounting period.

Maguire eluded to it being a ploy to give them an extra three months to publish their accounts.

However, speaking to the Albion Assembly in April, CEO Ron Gourlay confirmed there are no issues with the club’s accounts and that they’ll be made public before the end of June.

It’s odd but at the end of the day, it doesn’t mean too much.

West Brom’s accounts are unlikely to make good reading due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic when the club was in the Premier League.

That’s not much to worry about as every single club in the country was hard hit by being forced to play in front of empty seats every week.

However, another relegation, more sacked managers and rubbish signings are bound to have caused a detrimental affect over the last couple of years.
