West Brom in advanced talks to sign Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury

West Brom are in advanced talks with Hamza Choudhury’s representatives as they aim to sign the Leicester City midfielder on loan, according to the Northern Echo.

The newspaper reported on their website on Sunday (12 June) that Middlesbrough are also in discussions to sign the 24-year-old, who’s set to leave the King Power Stadium this summer to get his career back on track.

It is understood that Middlesbrough are keen to add to their midfield ahead of the 2022/23 Championship season and are also interested in ex-West Brom loanee Dwight Gayle.

If Choudhury does join the Baggies, he’ll be Steve Bruce’s second signing at The Hawthorns after John Swift agreed to join from Reading in a free transfer in May.

Getting closer

Choudhury really struggled for game-time at Leicester in the 2021/22 season, playing just 12 times across all competitions and starting only four Premier League matches.

Brendan Rodgers used the Loughborough-born midfielder as a centre-back and right-back at times but the former England Under-21s international is easily at his best in the centre of the park.

Choudhury’s skills are fairly well known.

He doesn’t hold back in the tackle and is a good reader of the game.

As a passer, he’s not terrible while stats by WhoScored show that he won 1.7 aerial duels per game in the Premier League this season.

It’s hard to get a gauge on Choudhury’s overall performance when he played so little for Leicester this season. However, he still ranked second in the Foxes squad for interceptions per game [2] and his 82.6 per cent pass accuracy ranked him eighth out of those with a decent level of game-time.

West Brom’s midfield was a bone of contention for most of the 2021/22 campaign.

Many of us will look at Choudhury and ask ourselves: “Surely he can’t be worse than Jake Livermore?”

He probably won’t be. And that’s a good start for a set of fans that are eager to see their players start to show some heart and desire once more.

Choudhury should do that.
