West Brom must forget local pride to sign 'fantastic' Cameron Archer from Aston Villa
Steve Bruce is making steady progress to overhaul the West Brom squad he inherited from Valerien Ismael during the 2021-22 season.
The Baggies ended up a lousy 10th in the Championship after a soul-draining run of performances from start to finish and there is an expectation from supporters that there will be a lot of changes at The Hawthorns this summer.
One of those who could arrive at the Albion is Aston Villa attacker Cameron Archer [Express and Star] who Steven Gerrard appears keen to send out on loan again for the 2022-23 campaign.
The 20-year-old, who has four goals in four games for England Under-21s, spent the second half of last season on loan at West Brom’s fellow second-tier side Preston North End where he scored seven times in 20 games.
It was only his second period of time away from Villa Park after a loan spell at Solihull Moors the season before and the first he had in the Football League but he took everything in his stride to excel at Deepdale.
“His quality levels are fantastic, he’s bullish, strong, he can roll, he has got that little burst of pace too,” Lilywhites manager Ryan Lowe said of Archer, as quoted by Lancashire Post.
Signing a player from one of Albion’s Midlands rivals would usually be frowned upon by fans who want to maintain that local pride but the Baggies need to realise they need their Premier League neighbours to help every now and then.
Archer proved during his short spell at Preston that he has the capabilities to score goals at this level and at a team like ours, he should get even more chances to put the ball in the back of the net.
Bruce may have to swallow his pride and ask Gerrard for his young hotshot if he wants the best chance at returning to the top flight at the earliest opportunity.
