Carlton Palmer expects West Brom to sign a new right-back this summer

West Brom have already managed to secure the signings of their two main transfer targets this summer but more is still to come.

Baggies manager Steve Bruce appears to have resolved his side’s creative woes from the 2021-22 campaign with the signings of Reading attacking midfielder John Swift and Millwall winger Jed Wallace.

But the attack is not the only area that needs improvement and the next incoming purchase at The Hawthorns could well be a reinforcement to the defence.

More specifically, BBC pundit Carlton Palmer believes that Bruce will target a right-back soon having played Dara O’Shea – a natural centre-half – in that position at times last season.

“O’Shea’s a centre-back, that’s his position, that’s his regular position,” Palmer said to Football League World. “He’s filled in there (right-back) and he can do a job in there but he will go back and play at centre-back now for sure.

“They’ll hope he avoids injuries and stays fit because he is a good player and he is very consistent at that level, when he’s fit.

“He is predominantly a centre-back and I expect Steve Bruce to bring a right fall back into the football club.”

Crucial

Palmer has hit the nail on the head here because we cannot expect to have a successful season with O’Shea and Darnell Furlong as our right-back options.

The latter has arguably only made it to the second division because he has a very long throw-in and that is always a useful weapon to have in your armoury but his defensive ability is severely lacking.

Other than him though, we don’t have another quality right-back to choose from and we can’t keep relying on O’Shea to fill in when there will be adequate options available to us in the transfer market.

We have enjoyed a good start to our transfer window so far with Swift and Wallace in for no fee but to make this a top summer, we have to make another three of four additions that will take this side from a mid-table Championship group to one that could challenge for promotion.

In other West Brom news, Andy Carroll is nearing a shock transfer after his Albion exit which could see him play Champions League football next season.
