West Brom given promotion challenge by new arrival John Swift

West Brom are targeting automatic promotion next season and nothing else will do, according to new signing John Swift.

The midfielder arrived at The Hawthorns following a successful six-year spell at Reading after The Royals narrowly avoided relegation last season.

Swift spoke to the Express and Star about his new challenge as Albion jet out to the Algarve for preseason where he insisted only promotion was enough.

“It’s massively exciting to challenge for the top spots,” he said.

“I think everyone is excited as well, promotion is the least that we want, obviously we want to be higher and push for the automatic spots.

“Hopefully we can get a good start, especially at home. We want to make our stadium somewhere that other teams will be fighting to go and hopefully we can start really well.”

Albion are moving in the right direction again

Steve Bruce has already made two high-quality additions this summer in Swift and Jed Wallace, with rumours indicating more are on the way.

Leicester midfielder Hamza Choudhury has been heavily linked with Albion for some time while Albion are reportedly leading the chase for Welsh international Tom Lawrence.

West Brom have the right manager to get them out of the Championship, with Bruce being more than familiar with what is required to get out of the Championship.

They stabilised towards the end of last season, picking up impressive wins over Fulham and Bournemouth.

Swift will give Albion an expansive midfielder to link the midfield and the forward line while Wallace will give them one of the most creative players at that level.

Signing Lawrence on top of that will give Albion two fine wide players, with Choudhury there to cover the defence and offer a bite in midfield.

This gives Albion the look of a complete and well-balanced squad, giving fans reason to be optimistic about their promotion chances.

In other West Brom news, Jed Wallace has spoken about the influence of Steve Bruce in bringing him to the club.
