West Brom deal to sign Hamza Choudhury ‘difficult to complete’ – The Athletic

West Brom are up against it in their pursuit of Leicester City midfielder with the two clubs wanting different deals, according to The Athletic.

The 24-year-old is unwanted at the King Power Stadium and Brendan Rodgers wants him to leave the club permanently but Steve Bruce is not as keen on such a deal.

The Baggies manager would prefer to take Choudhury on loan for the 2022-23 Championship season as they are hoping to sign him on a free transfer in the summer of 2023 when his contract expires.

As a result, The Athletic sees a deal between the two clubs as “difficult to complete” but Albion still want to sign another deep-lying midfielder in this transfer window.

Jake Livermore, Alex Mowatt and Jayson Molumby are all competent players who can fill that void if no deal can be struck for Choudhury but the preference is to invest before the season begins.

Wait

The Foxes really want Choudhury gone for good this summer which could make him available for cheap but we should still be holding off on making another offer.

He’s going to become a free agent in 12 months’ time so it would seem crazy to spend a significant amount of money to sign him now, especially in our current financial situation.

We can still try to force a loan move if we really want to sign him this summer transfer window to perhaps pay something to Leicester in terms of wages.

This is where we need to be smart and not rash in our decision making because it is this kind of move that has come back to haunt us in the past.

A midfield of Choudhury, Taylor Gardner-Hickman and John Swift does sound like one that could challenge for promotion from the Championship but we should not overspend to make it happen.

In other West Brom news, as much as the Albion would like to be making signings, there is an immediate need to sell before they can reinvest.
