Matt Clarke is unlikely to return to West Brom in the 2022/23 season
Matt Clarke will not be returning to West Brom in the 2022/23 season after Baggies chief executive Ron Gourlay provided an update on the club’s transfer stance.
The 25-year-old centre-back enjoyed a stellar season for the Baggies and was named supporters player of the season, but the imbalance in the squad needs to be sorted.
However, it appears that the Brighton defender has played his last game for West Brom after Gourlay’s latest comments.

As quoted by Birmingham live, Gourlay said: “We had too many defenders, not enough creative players.
“The hardest thing is going to be getting players out. We have got an imbalance in the squad and that is what we are trying to address.
“One or two players more will go.
“Johnstone, Carroll, big Clarkey, Snodgrass went during the period.”
Premier League chance?
Regardless of Gourlay’s comments, there is absolutely no chance that Steve Bruce didn’t want Clarke back at the club next season.
Losing a player of Clarke’s ability will ultimately have an impact on the Baggies squad.
Clarke is entering the final year of his Brighton contract and has been spotted training with Graham Potter’s side in pre-season according to Sussex Live.
There is every chance that the 25-year-old will finally be given his Brighton chance after three years of excellent performances in the Championship.

For West Brom, it’s crucial that they don’t focus entirely on the attacking side of things this summer.
Yes, the Baggies were solid defensively, but that doesn’t mean Bruce can let his best defenders leave the club and not adequately replace them.
Bruce has done well in the early part of the window, it is now crucial that he ensures his squad remains balanced heading into the new season.
