West Brom among five teams in chase to sign Elliot Anderson

West Brom are still in the race to sign Newcastle United midfielder Elliot Anderson on loan but they face stiff competition, according to The Athletic.

The 21-year-old was a part of the Bristol Rovers team that remarkably earned promotion from League One with a stunning 7-0 win over Scunthorpe United on the last day to usurp Northampton Town’s goal difference with Anderson scoring the crucial seventh goal.

As a result, the Baggies want to give him the chance at a higher level but so do Stoke City and Luton Town in the Championship and Sheffield Wednesday and Rovers in League One.

Despite us being in a higher division, though, the Magpies may choose to send Anderson to a team fighting for promotion in League One as they are likely to be attacking more often which is where he is at his best.

The recent signing of John Swift from Reading on a free transfer may also play a part in the Toon’s decision as there would not be a guarantee that the 21-year-old would start the majority of games.

The creativity of the West Brom squad is what really held them back last season as we lumbered to a 10th-placed finish after a late surge in results and Steve Bruce has already gone out and sorted those problems with Swift and Jed Wallace.

We don’t need to keep making additions in the same area when there are other areas where change is needed and our financial situation is likely to see big-money moves limited at the very best at The Hawthorns this summer.

A new striker to partner Daryl Dike wouldn’t go a miss unless Kenneth Zohore can find a sudden purple patch and while Anderson is a good attacking player, he is not someone who could play up front unless there is no other option.

He also isn’t going to fill our void at right-back with Darnell Furlong being less than impressive last season and Taylor Gardner-Hickman better suited to a midfield role.

He might be a talented player but he should not be a priority for us unless he comes completely free of charge but that is highly unlikely.

In other West Brom news, there are “immediate” plans for a big clearout at The Hawthorns.
