West Brom have not changed as Steve Bruce scolds team post-Crewe friendly

West Brom are continuing their nationwide pre-season friendly schedule but there appears to be a reoccurring problem with the team.

On Saturday (16 July) the Baggies travel north up the M6 to face League Two Crewe Alexandra at the Mornflake Stadium where summer recruit John Swift scored Albion’s goal in a 1-1 draw after Dan Agyei levelled the scores for the Railwaymen.

West Brom did dominate the majority of the game but Steve Bruce found himself once again lamenting his team’s lack of a clinical edge that plagued them throughout the 2021-22 campaign.

“It’s every game, it’s been the same,” Bruce said, as quoted by the Express and Star. “It’s not a concern just yet because we haven’t started. But we have to improve.

“In this run of games, we have dominated. We should do, don’t get me wrong. But we’ve missed big chances, big chances. Even when we’ve been offside we’ve missed!

“And we’ve also given three or four really poor goals away. We have to do better than that, but it’s the conversation rate that’s the real issue.”

This time though, we can’t blame the fact that our £7million striker Daryl Dike was injured because the American started the game and was not able to convert any chances that came his way.

Whether it is the personnel or the system we are trying to play is only known to those within The Hawthorns but it is clear that we cannot expect to reach any of our goals for the 2022-23 season if we don’t do something about this.

This wasn’t even a particularly strong side as Crewe were relegated bottom of League One last season and yet we could not find a way to win the game.

We are going to need some big additions before the season begins if we want any ambitions of even reaching the top half in the Championship this season.

In other West Brom news, a potential midfield addition could spell trouble for this Albion stalwart who needs to up his game to keep his place.
