Dan Plumley: New deal could see US investors jump at Championship clubs, West Brom could be affected

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive West Brom columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns...

Dan Plumley has insisted that American investors could now be much more interested in Championship clubs with a new merit-based system potentially in place.

The Finance Expert has shared that with the New Deal being discussed by Premier League clubs could bring in a merit-based system rather than parachute payments – something Americans prefer.

Plumley did admit, however, that bigger clubs who have chances to finish higher up could now be targeted, with West Brom certainly one of those.

“It’s an interesting one,” he exclusively told West Brom News.

“You are looking at the motives and you look at the system in American team sports, where we see US investment is mostly in the Premier League and the private equity firms that have been involved.

“You look at the merit-based system which is looking at potentially in the new deal and it goes back to the theory of recurring revenues that are set – if you are in the Premier League, you know you’re going to get that £100million from TV money every year.

“If a merit system was introduced in the Championship, you could target the bigger clubs, knowing they would finish higher up and get more money which is what American sport and investment like.”

Steve Bruce certainly has the goal of making West Brom the best Championship club this season and therefore pushing them back into the Premier League.

The Times shared the news of a new deal including a merit-based system rather than huge parachute payments, in an attempt to cut the gap between the two leagues financially.

On top of that, US investors are all over the Premier League, so dropping down into the Championship would be a seamless transition with big profits to be made if promoted too.

This is certainly one to watch in the coming months.
