Steve Bruce heaps praise on Zac Ashworth after impressive performance for West Brom v Sheffield United

Steve Bruce has heaped praise on left-back Zac Ashworth after his impressive performance for West Brom in the Carabao Cup win against Sheffield United.

The Baggies secured a 1-0 win on Thursday night to progress to the next stage, courtesy of Karlan Grant’s 73rd-minute strike.

Bruce was quoted in a report by Birmingham live where he stated that he is “very pleased” with the 19-year-old.

“He’s come on leaps and bounds in the last six months since I’ve been with him,” he said. “he’s getting bigger and stronger and has a bit to go in that respect. I’m very pleased with him.”

Promising

Bruce has a history of giving youngsters longer runs and grooming them into first-team players and West Brom fans will be hoping that he will do similar things with Ashworth.

The 19-year-old produced an exceptional performance for the Baggies in the win against Sheffield United where he played the full 90 minutes and looked completely at ease.

His temperament was supreme for someone so young which would give the player as well as the manager a much-needed boost for the future match.

Since West Brom are believed to be having a major say in the battle for promotion, it is important that Bruce must only keep players who can add value to the squad and who can be used when the chips are down.

In Ashworth, it seems that the Baggies have found a player who can be used as a substitute or can be used as a starter in a season where there will be too many matches for the players.

In other West Brom news, the boss has confirmed one of the names he and his recruitment team are considering signing in place of the American.
