West Brom make contact in bid to sign Chelsea left-back Baba Rahman

West Brom have made contact with Ghanaian defender Baba Rahman over a potential loan deal, according to Ghana Soccer Net.

The 28-year-old is still contracted to Chelsea having joined the club in 2015 from FC Schalke in Germany but he has only featured 23 times for the Blues, all of which came in the 2015-16 campaign.

Since then, he has been loaned out six times and West Brom are looking to make it seven and they are hopeful that they can get a deal for the left-back over the line.

Rahman’s most recent loan came at Reading last season and the Royals, with Paul Ince now in charge, would like to bring him back to the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

As well as his well-travelled club career, the 28-year-old has made 44 appearances for his native Ghana which included a run to the Africa Cup of Nations final in 2015 where they lost to the Ivory Coast.

Conor Townsend has been virtually unchallenged at left-back since the club’s relegation to the Championship at the end of the 2020-21 season and no manager has been able to rectify that.

Steve Bruce has seemingly realised that the Englishman has been in cruise control with no real pressure behind him other than the young and inexperienced Zak Ashworth and he’s off to make a big statement.

Rahman may not even be someone who Bruce wants to start every week but if the finances on the deal are good enough, then it could be the signing that brings the best out of Townsend.

Football is a squad game these days though and it would be unlikely that he can play every single game in every competition from now until May and the last thing the manager wants to be forced into is playing someone out of position.

Ashworth has potential, but probably needs a loan elsewhere in the EFL first so this move makes perfect sense.

In other West Brom news, Bruce confirmed after the Carabao Cup success that this promotion-winning striker is on his radar for a loan move.
