Alan Nixon shares update on West Brom move for free agent Lewis Grabban

The Sun’s Alan Nixon has suggested that a West Brom move for Lewis Grabban could be possible with the Baggies now set to miss out on Liam Delap to Stoke City.

The Athletic reported on 16 August that the Baggies are interested in a move for the 34-year-old free agent, who has been without a club since leaving Nottingham Forest in July.

However, Nixon has revealed that a deal could have been done weeks ago with the striker still in search of a new club.

Nixon replied to a question from a West Brom fan via his personal Twitter account (17 August): “Been free for weeks…if you had wanted him surely that could have been done by now… may be possible now post-Delap…but not heard it.”

How can Steve Bruce go from looking at an up-and-coming 19-year-old from the Premier League champions to a 34-year-old journeyman as his backup option?

Grabban is clearly a proven goalscorer at Championship level and has been for a number of years, but he shouldn’t be the man the Baggies turn to.

A younger player such as Delap would be a signing that would get fans excited, with an unproven Premier League talent potentially thriving in the second tier.

Realistically, Grabban will probably be at The Hawthorns for no longer than a year and use up a significant chunk of Bruce’s wage structure.

A Premier League youth player would be a low-risk signing that would also come on the cheap, with any loan deal likely to be subsidised by their parent club.

Let’s all hope that Bruce looks back to the top-flight to find the answer to his striking problems after Daryl Dike’s injury.

Grabban would not be a popular signing at The Hawthorns.
