Dan Plumley: West Brom winners if new merit-based payment system voted in

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive West Brom columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns...

Dan Plumley has insisted that the new merit-based financial system in the EFL will see West Brom become one of the biggest winners.

The Finance Expert admitted it would benefit the Baggies as they are tipped to finish higher in the Championship, but there is always a trade-off.

Where it may benefit the Albion, it is said that there will be individual clubs who lose much more often than win, based on the fact they finish lower.

“It would benefit West Brom,” he exclusively told West Brom News.

“You have the position of them being a bigger club, even if in the Championship, they are likely to finish higher up the table, so the merit-based system would be a positive for West Brom.

“The counter to that is what about the rest of the league? There is always that trade-off. individual clubs will win and lose, West Brom would be in the slightly winning camp.”

The Albion are into the second of the third year of their parachute payments after relegation from the Premier League, although they may be one of the last to earn that.

That is currently worth around £90million, with last season said to bring in around £44million for the Baggies, not that anyone saw that money in the end.

Now, Premier League clubs are set to agree on a new merit-based system after two years of stand-off, with that set to follow the parachute payments.

The Times have reported that the EFL wants £250million-plus in the new deal, so it will be a share of that based on where clubs finish, adding more meaning to where you finish.
