West Brom are eyeing a late summer swoop to sign goal-shy Sheffield United striker Oli McBurnie, according to Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

Writing via his Patreon account on Sunday (21 August), Nixon claimed that Albion are making a "surprise" check on the 26-year-old Scotland international.

It is understood that Steve Bruce is still "reeling" after missing out on Liam Delap to Stoke City but Sheffield United's surplus of strikers means Albion hope the Blades could let one go.

No thanks

If Albion are interested in signing a striker who cannot score for toffee then McBurnie is their man.

Since joining Sheffield United over three years ago, McBurnie has played 98 times in all competitions and scored a grand total of eight goals.

He hasn't scored a league goal for the Blades since December 2020 when he scored a Premier League goal against Leicester.

Last term, he started just eight Championship games as he dropped down the pecking order at Bramall Lane and has spent all of the summer recovering from a broken foot.

He's now back to full fitness and started against Blackburn on Saturday (20 August) and played 84 minutes.

He didn't score - of course - but he's back to full fitness.

West Brom's search for a new striker is taking them to some dark places.

You know it's bad when there are some fans on social media calling for Hal Robson-Kanu and Saido Berahino to return to The Hawthorns.

McBurnie wouldn't be a bad signing though.

He'd be a terrible one.
