West Brom have made big transfer blunder as Hannibal Mejbri nears Birmingham loan
West Brom have had an indifferent start to the 2022-23 season and could do with two or three new players ahead of the transfer deadline.
Steve Bruce is actively searching for a new striker with Daryl Dike ruled out through injury for some time – potentially for the World Cup too – but a number nine can’t be the only player on his agenda.
John Swift is a welcome addition to the midfield department but the Baggies are under threat of relying on him to be their only source of creativity from central areas and that heaps a lot of pressure on his shoulders.
If he ends up getting injured himself, Bruce would be left without a competent attacking midfielder and that is why he had been targeting a move for Manchester United teenager Hannibal Mejbri [Sky Sports, 23 July, 3:25pm].
But Radio Mosaique journalist Ahmed Adala-Scoulino has now reported that a move to Birmingham City appears only days away for the Tunisian international who is keen to stay in England.
The 19-year-old had chosen the Blues over other competitors but Adala-Scoulino does say that a switch to another second-tier club could still happen.
“The departure of Hannibal Mejbri is (obviously) still relevant,” he said. “Hannibal had chosen Birmingham several days ago and his club knows it (there have been discussions), but a departure to another Championship club remains probable. Hannibal Mejbri wants to stay in England.”

If that other Championship team is West Brom, then Ron Gourlay has to be doing absolutely everything he can to stop the talented Tunisian from joining Albion’s cross-city rivals when he could be the catalyst to something great at The Hawthorns.
Bruce has already seen previous summer targets Lewis Grabban and Liam Delap join other clubs recently so he needs to use his status at Old Trafford as a club favourite to ensure Mejbri heads to West Bromwich over St Andrews.
