West Brom want to sign Hertha Berlin striker Davie Selke on deadline day – Sky Sports Germany

West Brom are showing late summer interest in Hertha Berlin centre-forward Davie Selke, according to Sky Sports Germany.

The German broadcaster reported via their live transfer blog on Thursday (1 September, 07:43am) that Albion are looking to make a deadline day move for the 27-year-old.

However, it is understood that a deal is “unlikely” at this point with Hertha’s Polish striker Krzysztof Piatek set to join Salernitana in Serie A.

Too late

Albion’s striker issues have been well-document for most of the summer.

Even if Daryl Dike was fit, we should still be in the market for additions up front so to show interest at Selke at this late stage is frustrating when he may have been up for grabs before the Piatek move to Salernitana gained traction.

However, if the Baggies want to add a proven goalscorer to their side before the summer transfer window closes at 11pm on Thursday night, it’s probably best they avoid Selke anyway.

Although the former Werder Bremen and RB Leipzig scored for Hertha Berlin in a friendly match at The Hawthorns this summer, he’s only ever scored 34 times in 192 Bundesliga appearances.

The German striker is a colossal beast of a striker and was even tipped to play for the Germany national team in recent years due to their striker shortage.

He’d offer Albion an outlet up front, sure. But it doesn’t seem as though he’d offer goals.

Either way, it’s a moot point because Sky Sports Germany don’t seem to think this is a deal that will happen on deadline day.
