Ron Gourlay shifts to free-agent market for new West Brom transfer push

West Brom could still make three new signings as they enter the free-agent market, according to The Athletic.

Ron Gourlay is said to have pivoted into a new market already after the deadline day disappointment of missing out on Steven Alzate, Josh Onomah and Theo Walcott.

The priority is said to remain in midfield as the Baggies look at free agents, but a move for a striker will be taken forward if a sensible deal is on the table.

Writing in his latest piece for The Athletic, Elias Burke shared what the plans are at the boardroom level now that the window has slammed shut in a disappointing fashion.

“The club will now switch their attention to the free-agent market, where they are confident in bringing in two or three more new signings,” he wrote.

“Albion are understood to be prioritising reinforcements in midfield but will pursue a move for a striker if a sensible deal presents itself.

“At the same time, Gourlay pivots again to identify quality in a challenging market.”

West Brom

Desperate.

The 1-1 draw against Burnley on Friday evening (02 September) proved just how desperate the Baggies need more reinforcements in their squad.

Bruce is down to the barebones in defence due to injuries, and the lack of firepower is really starting to harm our chances of promotion to the Premier League already.

Karlan Grant doesn’t look like he will score regularly, and even Jed Wallace and Grady Diangana started to waste huge chances that somehow didn’t go in.

A new striker, as well as new options in midfield that means Jake Livermore doesn’t have to be our impact substitute, would help massively moving forward.

Right now, letting go of Alex Mowatt appears to have been a bad move after failing to replace him, but we have to hope that Gourlay can pull a rabbit out of a hat for that – something we doubt.

All eyes are now on those free agent moves, fingers crossed.

In other West Brom news, the club had already been dealt a “massive kick in the head” in latest transfer window.
