Dan Plumley: ‘Dangerous’ EFL change could hit West Brom and entire Championship hard

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive West Brom columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns...

Dan Plumley has insisted that West Brom could be hit by the EFL as they could match their Financial Fair Play rules with the Premier League.

The finance expert has reacted to reports suggesting that the FFP limits moving up to £105million would be “dangerous” as clubs can start to gamble with money they do not have.

Plumley suggested that a more realistic plan would be to potentially full get rid of parachute payments, which the Baggies are currently getting and look to distribute a better broadcasting deal.

“I think that would be a dangerous play for the EFL to make,” he exclusively told West Brom News.

“At the minute, the EFL rules do not work at the minute in the Championship as clubs are not profitable or sustainable and you have this issue where loads of them have been selling their stadiums and you have parachute payments like West Brom have got coming down so that distorts the balance in the league.

It’s easy to say they can up the figure to the Premier League level of £105million, but that is dangerous.

“You then run the risk of clubs trying to gamble against that even more with money they have not got. I’d be much more inclined that reduces or gets rid of parachute payments completely, spends more time looking at a broadcasting distribution that works for the whole league and bridges that financial cliff-edge between the Championship and the Premier League.”

This would make very little sense and it would maybe put clubs like West Brom at risk.

Even as things stand now, the Baggies are likely to be very cautious with little money being spent and numerous loans still needing to be repaid by the hierarchy.

This is certainly one to watch in the coming months as change could be on the horizon very soon.
