Nigel Quashie fumes at West Brom after miserable derby defeat v Birmingham City

Nigel Quashie didn’t hold back in his attack on West Brom after their 3-2 defeat to Birmingham City on Wednesday night.

After playing for both West Brom and Birmingham City throughout his career, Quashie is certainly familiar with the rivalry in the West Midlands.

The former Baggies midfielder watched on as Steve Bruce’s side suffered a 3-2 defeat at the Hawthorns thanks to a Scott Hogan hattrick.

He certainly didn’t hold back when delivering his vedict after the full-time whistle, with the 44-year-old blasting West Brom’s players for their lack of spirit.

“A local derby! It’s about winning individual duals, second balls, tackles, desire, determination, a willingness to run,” said Quashie via Twitter.

“It’s for your teammates, the supporters and the club you represent! Correct me if I’m wrong but that’s the minimum in this game.”

Cause for concern

Quashie hit the nail on the head – not only did West Brom suffer defeat on Wednesday night, but the manner of the loss was simply not good enough considering the importance of it being a local derby.

With the Baggies now slipping down to 20th in the table with just one win in nine matches this season, Bruce will be rightfully worried about his position at the club.

Despite dominating much of the possession at the Hawthorns, the squad continue to look fragile and vulnerable – and they now possess one of the worst defensive records in the division with 13 goals conceded in just nine games.

Change is needed quickly if West Brom are to turn the season around, and that likely starts with a change at the top. Victory in the derby would’ve been an ideal turning point in Bruce’s season, but a sinking defeat may have been the final nail in his coffin.
